ที่มาของโครงการ
การตอบรับและความร่วมมือมากมายจากการจัดโครงการ “ฉันเป็นนักออกแบบกราฟิกไทย” ในปี พศ. 2552 โดยการเชิญชวนให้นักออกแบบกราฟิกไทยส่งผลงานเข้าร่วมแสดงนิทรรศการผ่านการถือป้ายภายใต้คําว่า “ฉันเป็นนักออกแบบกราฟิกไทย” ผลงาน 1,146 ผลงาน ณ แกรนด์ฮอลล์ สยามดิสคัพเวอรี่ เป็นสิ่งที่ทําให้คณะทํางานตระหนักถึงพลังแห่งการมีส่วนร่วมของสังคมออกแบบกราฟิกไทย และเป็นสิ่งที่ทําให้เราเรียนรู้ต่อไปว่า “ท่ามกลางความร่วมมือของเพื่อนร่วมอาชีพนี้ เราจะนําเสนอแนวทางความร่วมมือต่อๆ ไปอย่างไร ให้เกิดศักยภาพและประโยชน์อย่างยั่งยืน” การจัดนิทรรศการด้วยเงินจํานวนมาก (สําหรับเรา) อาจจะดูยิ่งใหญ่และเป็นรูปธรรม แต่ถ้าเราจะร่วมมือกันได้โดยต้องอาศัยทุนเป็นปัจจัยหลักเท่านั้น ก็คงเป็นปัจจัยที่คณะทํางานไม่สามารถควบคุมได้ ในปีต่อๆ ไป ภาพโครงไม้ เวที อุปกรณ์ต่างๆ ของนิทรรศการที่ถูกรื้อถอน
ในวันสุดท้ายของนิทรรศการ ทําให้เราตั้งคําถามกับตัวเองว่าเราจะทําอย่างไรให้สิ่งดีๆ และมีคุณค่าเหล่านี้อยู่กับเราและคนรุ่นหลังต่อไปได้...
ฉันเป็นนักออกแบบกราฟิกไทย 2553 หรือ IMTGD 2010: Somewhere Thai เป็นโครงการที่จะจัดขึ้นในปี 2553 นี้ โดยเช่นเดิมที่โครงการนี้เน้นการมีส่วนร่วม โดยการเชิญและชักชวนนักออกแบบเรขศิลป์ร่วมส่งผลงานที่นําเสนอหรือสะท้อนความหมาย ภายใต้ประเด็น “Somewhere Thai” โดยสามารถส่งผลงานเข้าร่วมได้หลายรูปแบบมากขึ้น ผลงานที่ส่งเข้าร่วมจะเป็นสัญลักษณ์ / โปสเตอร์ / การออกแบบตัวอักษร / บรรจุภัณฑ์ / ภาพถ่าย / ภาพประกอบ / ภาพกราฟิก / โมชั่นกราฟิก / ภาพยนตร์ / บทความฯลฯ จะเป็นผลงานเรียน ผลงานจริง หรือเป็นผลงานทดลองก็ได้ โดยจะรวบรวมเพื่อนํามาเสนอในรูปแบบการประชุมสัมมนา IMTGD®Forum และหนังสือ
แนวคิดในการรวบรวมครั้งนี้ ไม่ได้มีจุดมุ่งหมายที่จะรณรงค์ให้นักออกแบบไทยร่วมกันพยายามแสดงความเป็นไทย ในผลงานของตนเอง แต่คาดหวังที่จะรวบรวมมุมมองและความคิดเห็น (ที่เชื่อว่าหลากหลายและแตกต่างกัน) เกี่ยวกับประเด็นอัตลักษณ์ของไทยในผลงานออกแบบ ผลงานทั้งหลายที่ถูกส่งเข้ามาร่วมในโครงการ จะเป็นเหมือนวัตถุดิบและภาพสะท้อนของสิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นจริงจากแง่มุมต่างๆ ผ่านผลงานกราฟิกแขนงต่างๆ โดยทางโครงการจะนําผลงานทั้งหลายมาหาข้อสังเกตผ่านกระบวนการวิจารณ์ เพื่อนํามาเสนอเป็นบทความ, การบรรยาย และการเสวนา เพื่อให้เกิดการแลกเปลี่ยนหลักการหรือความคิดเห็น อันจะทําให้เกิดพัฒนาการทางความคิด ในการสร้างสรรค์งานเรขศิลป์ร่วมสมัยต่อไป
“Somewhere Thai” ในที่นี้ เป็นทั้งคําถาม / คําตอบ / หัวข้อ / แนวคิด ฯลฯ ตามแต่ที่นักออกแบบแต่ละคนจะตีความ หลายท่านคงตั้งข้อสังเกตว่าเหตุใดจึงตั้งชื่อ โครงการเป็นภาษาอังกฤษ (โดยไม่มีชื่อไทย) แต่เนื้อหากลับชักชวนให้หันมาพิจารณา เรื่องอัตลักษณ์ไทย ทางผู้ริเริ่มอาจตอบคําถามนี้ได้ไม่ตรงใจทุกคน แต่เหตุผลหลักของเราก็คือ ภาษาอังกฤษนั้นมีความคลุมครือ สําหรับคนไทยมากกว่าภาษาไทย (ที่ทุกคนคุ้นเคยอย่างดี)
การทําให้หัวข้อหรือโจทย์ดูคลุมเครือ (ไม่ชัดเจน)นั้นอาจทําให้เราได้ผลงานที่อิสระ แตกต่างและหลากหลาย กว่าการที่ทุกคนจะเข้าใจไปว่า นี่คือโครงการที่มุ่งให้นักออกแบบมาประชันผลงานว่าใครมีความคิดหรือรูปแบบ ที่มีความเป็นไทยมากกว่ากัน หรือดีเยี่ยมกว่ากัน (ซึ่งเป็นสิ่งที่ทางคณะทํางานไม่คาดหวังจะให้เกิดขึ้น)
หัวข้อปีนี้อาจไม่สนุกเท่าปีแรก... และเช่นเดียวกันที่เราก็ต้องหาทุนไปพร้อมกับการเริ่มงาน แต่ก็อยากจะชักชวนให้มาร่วมกันนําเสนองานที่สะท้อนความคิดเชิงปัจเจกของเราแต่ละคน ผ่านสถานะที่พวกเราทุกคนใช้เรียกตัวเองว่า “นักออกแบบ”
STATEMENT
Acknowledging an enthralling response and numerous collaborations from the pioneer project “I am a Thai Graphic Designer” in 2009, encouraging Thai graphic designers to display their works in the exhibition that involved stationed boards with the message saying “I am a Thai Graphic Designer”, 1146 works were showcased at the Grand Hall, Siam Discovery Center raised our awareness and signified the muscle of participation in Thai graphic designers profession raising a question that “ How can we present a continuous collaboration in order to achieve sustainable and efficient benefit among the huge participation of our colleagues in this profession?”
The idea of organizing the exhibition lavishly with big amounts of money might present a grand and concrete picture, but if we continue to collaborate relying up on monetary resources as the only priority, it could also cause uncontrollable budget in the future. Looking at the image of wood structure, stage and equipment being dismantled on the last day of the exhibition raised the question among us that “How can we maintain these works and preserve its value for the next generation?”
“I am a Thai Graphic Designer 2010” or “IMTGD 2010 Forum” will be held this year, emphasizing on participation and inviting graphic designers to send their works that reflect the idea of “Somewhere Thai”. The submission can be made in various formats such as symbol, poster, typography, product design, photography, motion graphic, film, article, etc. It could even be a design by a student, a professional or an experimental work that would be collected and presented as a seminar entitled “IMTGD®Forum” and a project book.
Besides the objective of encouraging Thai graphic designers to show Thai identity through their works we also aim at gathering perspectives and opinions (that we believe are diverse and different) about Thai identity in design work. All the submitted works in this project would be a source as well as reflection of realistic incidents and point of views. At the end, we will analyze all the works through a research methodology and present them as article, lecture and seminar in order to exchange ideology and opinion which would eventually develop creative thinking in the contemporary graphic design profession in the future.
“Somewhere Thai” can be a question, answer, topic, concept, and so on based on the interpretation of each graphic designer. Some of you may notice as to why the project is titled in English only, while on the contrary the theme discusses about Thai identity. Though the initiator might not be able to answer this question as you expect, but our foremost reason is that an English term has its own ambiguity, much more than a Thai translated version and such an approach could fetch a diverse variety and free interpretation of works rather than emphasizing on who has more Thainess in their work or who produces better work, which we don’t expect to happen.
Though the theme for this year may not be enticing as last year... considering that we have to look for funding at the start of the project, but we warmly invite you all to send your work reflecting individual ideas and thus portray ourselves as what we swear by i.e. “Graphic Designer”.
